The skill level required for simply finishing the game is actually a lot lower than Ultra, but perfectionists looking for 100% completion have a real job ahead of them. ![]() The stable frame rate is crucial, as precision is a big part of Velocity 2X. And all of this runs at a silky 60 frames per second, even on Vita. These visuals are backed with an uptempo electronic score that fits the game perfectly and never seems to get redundant, even after multiple playthroughs of the same level. Rather than the same metallic sci-fi environments of Ultra, Velocity 2X introduces a handful of themed environments, from ice planets to waterfall-strewn utopias. While it's not the sort of game that would wow your friends with the power of the PS4, it is stylistically beautiful and far more varied than Ultra was. Presentationally, Velocity 2X is a definite step above its predecessor. It's an entirely different style of play. Kai has her own selection of tech, from a 360-degree hand laser to a blaster rifle to a short-range teleporter. These sequences shift the camera from top-down to side-scrolling, putting you in control of Kai, the game's heroine. Instead, they added an entirely new style of play, 2D platforming, which is nearly as prevalent as the ship gameplay.Īlmost every level in Velocity 2X is sprinkled with docking stations where you'll disembark from your ship and enter an interior. Had the developers stopped there, simply adding 50 more levels of increasingly difficult challenges, I'm sure there would have been an audience. Some minor tweaks have been made to these systems (sure to only be noticed by obsessive Ultra veterans), but all of the changes are for the better, increasing playability while reducing the trial and error that the first game required. You have access to teleporters, bombs and lasers, each of which is crucial at specific times. The in-ship gameplay of 2X is almost identical to what was seen in Velocity Ultra. Unlike most scrolling shooters, though, the gunplay in Velocity 2X actually takes a back seat to traversal and exploration, as you attempt to rescue survivors and collect shards while making it to the end of a stage under the target time. It's still a strictly 2D game where you control a ship tasked with completing various objectives as you progress through a series of constantly scrolling maps. If you’re a fan of Kirby games or looking for a solid side-scrolling platformer, then you really can’t go wrong with Kirby Star Allies.Velocity 2X remains true to many of the roots of the franchise. The game features amiibo support, but hardly worth noting – only offering some added health and puzzle pieces (which you’ll use to unlock hand-drawn art pieces showcasing Kirby’s history). Nintendo has announced some free downloadable content in the form of new Star Allies, but I hope they grace us with some new worlds/levels down the road too, even if they’re paid DLC. But the secrets are definitely worth hunting down as there are some pretty nostalgic bits hidden in there. It’s not an overly long game, clocking in at six or so hours depending on how much time you spend seeking out the various secrets. With four-player local support, you’ll definitely want to ensure you have some buddies over to fully enjoy this title. Kirby Star Allies provides the Nintendo Switch with a very solid Kirby adventure that’ll be a sure hit for fans of Kirby’s past adventures. Let me make something abundantly clear, I had a ton of fun with Kirby Star Allies (even more so when I played multiplayer with my son). There are other mini-games, but I’d hate to spoil them for fans here. You’ll have to time your button presses to build up your swing meter and then hit an incoming meteor at the right time to send it light years into space. Star Slam Heroes, on the other hand, is much more enjoyable. ![]() ![]() ![]() It’s not great, but worth a play through. Chop Champs has you racing against your opponents to chop as much wood as you can while avoiding bugs. They’re like Kirby versions of Mario Party mini-games that up to four players can join in on. “If you’ve been enjoying Kirby games since his 8-bit beginnings, then you’re in for a treat…”Īs an added bonus, Hal Laboratory has included a mini-games into the mix that are fun little time wasters. However, the advantage of playing as player two, three, or four are all the cool characters you can control such as the Dream Palace Star Allies! It’s worth noting that multiplayer is local only – no online features here. Player one, who’ll play as Kirby, will be the primary focal point for the game, so any other players who deviate too far away will warp right back to Kirby. Each player only needs one Joy-Con controller and can drop in at any time. Kirby Star Allies is playable for up to four players.
